My inspirational moment

By Josh Verghese 8:30 English
Music is a global language, every country can listen to it. You may not understand the words but you can interpret the beat of the music. You can tell if it's a happy, sad, or mad song just by interpreting its tone. Anyone in the world can do that , unless you are deaf. My story was when I heard this song “Pieces” by Sum 41. I liked that song because you can play it on a acoustic and it sounds almost like the original. The song didn’t use any guitar effects and at that time I only had an acoustic guitar. I also like the vocals, not completely the lyrics but the beat of the vocals and the beat of the song.
About a year ½ ago I started guitar again after quitting for sometime because I moved here. I had a guitar teacher in Germany but when I moved here I didn’t have a teacher so I quit. So I spent quite some time not playing guitar instead I played piano. Last year I got tired of being taught piano and quit. So one afternoon I was listening to my Ipod and heard this song I just got. It was called Pieces by Sum 41. I liked it immediately because of its tone. So I looked it up on the Internet and there were videos of Sum 41 played the song on acoustic and piano. It sounded great in both.
The song sort of struck an idea in me that was growing in previous months. I told my self weeks before to start guitar but I never found a great reason to. This song actually gave me a reason not only to start but to continue guitar.
The lyrics also gave me some motivation. The first lines catch your attention. “ I tried to be perfect, but nothing was worth it. I don't’ believe it makes me real. I thought I’d be easy but no one believes me.” The lyrics still sort of confuse me because it doesn’t give a straight meaning of the song. I think it means he lied in his past and is trying to fix it. This reminds me of my past. When I was little I used to lie and then I tried to fix it. I did fix it by the end of 4th grade but in 5th grade people still brought up little jokes about it.
So I looked in guitar stores for this song. I found the CD guitar book which covered all the songs on their album called Chuck. So I taught my self the names of the guitar strings the name of notes and where they were located at. I also reviewed guitar tab which is an easier way to learn songs. So I tried to learn off sheet music but I got a bit lazy and decided to learn by tabs instead.
I got the strumming pattern down and memorized the tab. I spent 2 weeks getting that song perfect. My solo was a bit slow and off but I spent about 3 days focusing on that solo and I got it down. I then tried to learn other songs also. They were harder but I still continue trying to learn the song what ever one it was.
So a year after my inspirational moment I still continue to play the guitar. Now I have an electric guitar so I can play almost whatever song I want to play. I no longer have an excuse to say no to learning a song. Why make an excuse? Music is a gift you receive and present at the same time. You hear your own music and that gives you self satisfaction. If anyone hears your music that will also most likely lighten up their day.

I believe paper

I believe paper
I believe that there should be more laws on dog ownership. I honestly think there should be more laws on dog ownership. There should be more reasoning in buying a dog. I think that people should sign law-enforced bills enforcing them to take proper care of their dogs. I think that adoption agencies should be more active.
If people were law enforced to take care of a dog once they bought one there would be a lot less abandoned dogs and mistreated dogs because the people know that they will face a penalty for mistreating their dog. There should be laws to prevent dogs from being abused. I think that there should be laws like child abuse laws. Of course to a lesser scale but still we need laws to prohibit the mistreatment of dogs and all pets. Not only will that lower our stray dog number that will save time picking up poop from stray dogs. We will have a cleaner community.
I think that humane societies such as our Hawaiian Humane society should be more active. They should be holding more public meeting talking about their situation and how everyone can help. There should be public events displaying dogs and how to properly treat dogs. There are pet expos but they need to better display how to take care of an animal.
Society needs to know the importance of animals. We have killed enough species off its time to take care of the animals that are still alive. We should start off with our own pets and then we can widen our scope. Of course endangered species are our first priority to save but I believe we need to take better care of our pets.

Sonnet

The Beach by Josh Verghese
Thou art the highlight of my fine summer’s day
Thou fine grains of sand fill your shore
Your sand may be white, yellow, green, or black
Thou washes and recedes and creates a swishing sound that resounds in your head
Thou waves breakes and creates a perfect form
Thou lush green palms pollinate thou shorelines
Your shore littered with people soaking up the sun like spong
Your waters scattered with surfers, bodyboarders, swimmers and snorkerlers
Your tide decides our weekend
Whether we go to the beach or stay at home
Your mystery
Your murderous habits
Your peaceful serenity
